WHAT: Brooklyn Flea Market

WHY: It’s that time of year when the grass defrosts and the Brooklyn Flea comes back outside in Fort Greene on Saturdays and Williamsburg on Sundays.

Foodies, take note: Both locations feature a dizzying array of edibles, from Fine and Raw coconut chunky bonbons ($7) to Porchetta chicory salad with garlic dressing ($6).

WHEN & WHERE: Through 9/29;

Saturdays: 176 Lafayette Avenue
between Clermont + Vanderbilt Avenue

Sundays: East River State Park
90 Kent Ave at N. 7 Street

Last week, I noticed traffic coming to The Stylish City from a website called “Street Easy”. In case you are not familiar with the site, it serves as a resource for real estate information. It’s also a place for people to virtually congregate in order to discuss the various advantages and disadvantages of living in certain NYC neighborhoods.

One of our articles about the Upper East Side was apparently at the center of a controversial argument regarding whether or not the UES neighborhood lives up to its perceived coolness. There were voices arguing that Brooklyn — and Williamsburg, in particular — was a cooler place to live compared to the Upper East Side. I have no response to those individuals’ opinions, but I am really grateful that some people would rather live in Brooklyn instead of where I live, as it is quite expensive here.

Moving on to today’s choice designer sales. For those of you who love the preppy, colorful style of Lilly Pulitzer, the vibrant feminine collections by Michelle Smith of Milly, and/or the glamorous day wear from See by Chloe, I present you today’s picks. The kicker? Each of the aforementioned designers have locations on the Upper East Side. How cool is that?

You need to reorganize your budget to accomodate gift purchases, but you still want to look lovely for your holiday parties.

Your friend has the straightest, shiniest, healthiest hair. She attributes her commercial-worthy locks to $250 Brazilian Keratin mastermind Faisal at Laicale salon in Soho. For the past year you’ve been spending a pretty penny on your locks, but it’s almost Hanukkah. You need to reorganize your budget to accommodate gift purchases, but you still want to look lovely for your holiday parties.
Ever-popular keratin hair treatments use the hair’s natural proteins (er, keratin) at the same pH level as your normal hair to strengthen, nourish and provide UV protection for your hair. Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT) leaves hair frizz free, soft and shiny for up to four months. Kertatin treatments can be performed on chemically treated hair, previously relaxed hair, permed and virgin hair.  (Note: It is super important to make sure Keratin treatments are received from reputable salons as treatments that have sulfide, chloride or formaldehyde can permanently damage hair and lead to hair loss.)

This is your lucky season. Empire Beauty School, with locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, is offering the famed treatment from now until New Year’s Eve for $48. No, srsly. No, for real. Advanced students performing treatments are strictly supervised by salon professionals. Empire’s BKT is safe for all hair types (see also: won’t make your hair fall out) and produces shampoo commercial-worthy locks for the holiday season.

Call to schedule an appointment – Manhattan 646.213.0875, Brooklyn 718.373.2400, Queens 718.726.8383

Remove summer grime, relax and pamper yourself during fall Spa Week, October 12-18th.

Cheryl Reid, founder of Spa Week and owner of SPA MEDIA LLC, launched the first Spa Week in October 2004 as a way to educate New Yorkers about the benefits of spa services while providing an affordable way to enjoy them. Spa Week gained such industry hype it quickly expanded nationally and caught the attention of major corporate sponsors. (Saab, Allure, etc.) Now Cheryl aims to introduce a new generation of spa goers to wellness benefits they can take part in, at least bi-annually. Maybe it’s for “wellness benefits” or maybe Spa Week is just a genius marketing idea. After all, Reid formerly owned a New York City public relations firm. Either way, Spa Week allows the average Josephine great treatments for just half a hundo – AKA $50.
Spa WeekHow to participate? Visit http://www.spaweek.com. Register your name, email and other optional information. Then click on your respective territory. An index of results will appear with – at least for New Yorkers – an overwhelming amount of spa participants. Here it helps to have a specific spa in mind. Ask rich friends which spas they frequent. Each spa lists the Spa Week services they are offering. For instance, Completely Bare offers laser hair removal for bikini or underarm, Fresh in Soho offers a 60 minute Balance and Nourish Face Treatment, and the Salon & Spa at Saks Fifth Avenue offers a 60 minute Therapeutic Massage amongst other services.

How to book? Fall Spa Week runs October 12-18th – as in next week. Make a list the spa/services you intend to book complete with back ups as services do fill up during Spa Week. Try for days when your schedule is more flexible as you want to maximize the benefits of your relaxing services by pairing them with a relaxing day.  Call individual spas to book. Spa Week does not book through their website, but if you sign up on their email list, they do provide spa specials throughout the year.
