You know how some people love/hate Valentine’s Day? That’s exactly how I feel about Mother’s Day. Don’t get me wrong. I love my mother, but she lives in Europe and gets celebrated on March 8th. Which brings up my next point. I kind of like how the European version of the holiday takes a more inclusive approach to celebrating all women on that day. What if we don’t have children? Are we not worthy of being celebrated? Thank you, Hallmark, for reminding me every year how imperfect my life is. Have I mentioned that this year my birthday falls exactly on Mother’s Day? Yeah, I know — I need something to cheer me up.

If you live midtown area – or your mother does – then on the west side, Faina Day Spa has a three hour special including manicure, pedicure, facial and aromatherapy massage. Or on the east side, and for $20 bone less, you’re madre can enjoy a hot stone massage, ionic facial, seaweed massage and sauna at Elemur Day Spa 56 on 56th and 3rd. For downtowners, Tribeca Beauty Salon (pictured) on Harrison Street is offering both Mother’s Day specials and mother and daughter packages. Supple Spa on 19th Street has $130 for two collegen facials for mothers and daughters.
For more mother’s day spa specials, visit www.spa-nyc.com. Or go ahead and call your favorite spa and ask for mother’s day specials. No matter how wonderful you think your favorite spa is, they are hurting for business like the rest of the industry. Strike while the iron’s hot. After all, she is your mother.

Some things you should know before you go: 1) Spas book up quickly, so make reservations in advance…as in today. 2) Tip well. On average, 15-20% is the going rate to tip on your massage therapist or facialist. Because spa week treatments are less expensive but not less work, we recommend tipping higher than that on your treatment or tipping 15-20% of the regular cost of the treatment if your budget allows. 3) There are participants all over the city, so use this opportunity to try something new. Have a massage near that Upper West Side restaurant you’ve been dying to try. New Yorker’s need any excuse to get them out of their hood. 4) Learn more. Other fun ways to follow the Spa Week action? Follow them on Twitter at @SPAWEEK and read their blog, Spa Week Daily. 5) Get Vajazzled. Yup, that’s right. Because nothing says “I’m relaxed” than overpriced crystals adorned to your flower. 6) For a serious laugh, check out Spa Week Daily’s Spa Crawl video blog of this girl – I guess she works for Spa Week – mid-slather, lather and shine at her once a day $50 treatment.
And amidst all of those instructions and options remember to breathe deeply. This is supposed to be relaxing.
