Zero + Maria Cornejo Sample Sale: Shoppers Go Mad For Leather + Silk

26 April 2012

The small, dimly lit Centre Street studio that housed the Zero + Maria Cornejo Clothing, Footwear & Accessories Sample Sale that kicked off today, was cramped as shoppers racked through a quaint selection of top quality Ready To Wear fashions. Less is more, or so they say, and since there were seemingly more people than designs, shoppers turned into thieves anytime they spotted a blouse or dress that they liked. For example, when I found a terrific piece that I wanted to photograph, it was grabbed right before I could snap a picture to show you all. So be armed with your aggression as you venture inside!

The majority of the Zero + Maria Cornejo Sample Sale featured winter clothing from this past season, including hats and gloves ($75) and women’s coats ($500). There was plenty of the Hooded Doleman Jacket in Gold Boucle ($500), a beautiful artisanal fabric in a cape-like cut. The buttery soft Evi Cropped Jacket in Bodrum Leather ($450, orig $1,798) may be the best find of the entire sale. While you’re there, even if you can’t afford it, take a peek at the Short Blanket Wrap in Merino Shearling ($1,500).

There was not a vast selection of shoes, only about five pairs to choose from. The Orange Llama Coating Booties ($100) were the most interesting (and loud), as were the Armadillo Black Sandals by Eileen Shields ($250).

All Tunics and Dresses were $300. This section was quite cramped and hard to navigate through, so have patience. Be aware that some of these pieces had small holes, so be sure to do two or three look-overs before handing over your credit card. I loved the Orange Mulla Dress with a Satin Back ($300) and was simply obsessed with the deep pockets and plunging neckline of the Uni Jacquard Mackie Dress in ink and white ($300).

An elegant Shell Top in Silk Ivory is a must buy ($198) and the Knit Jersey Dresses ($175) are amazingly soft yet well made. A small collection of cashmere sat in the back of the room near furiously changing shoppers who huddled in front of a single mirror, trying on all their steals. The interesting Lima Tunic Silk Cotton Cashmere Top in Funghi was part sleeveless and part draping sleeve ($150, pictured). All Knits and Woven Sweaters were $150.

The only current season finds were located in a series of boxes in the front of the room. Here, bikinis and one-piece bathing suits were plentiful. The nicest swimwear pieces were olive in color, namely the Side Elastic Bikini Anamur ($75). Graphic tanks were super cute but extra baggy, and smalls and extra smalls were slight. If you like the boyfriend look definitely grab yourself a Joey One Cunet Tee or Tank in either grey, white, or navy ($35).
