Yigal Azrouel Sample Sale Review 5/17

Like everything by Israeli designer (and reported ladies’ man) Yigal Azrouel, the items at his current sample sale are not for wallflowers. Almost everything we spotted was fitted, brief, and altogether sexy. Azrouel’s clothing is structured enough that you don’t necessarily need a perfect body to wear these pieces (though it wouldn’t hurt), but you do need a boatload of confidence.

Take, for example, a burgundy bandage skirt ($193 from $565). Though it’s undeniably short and tight, the ultra-heavy knit works almost as a girdle, smoothing out unsightly lumps. The same skirt also comes in a futuristic silver from Azrouel’s Cut 25 line – an even better deal at just $40. A crepe little black dress ($267 from $890) is as slinky as crepe can possibly be, but once again the exquisite tailoring saves it from the exclusive realm of sylphs. This tailoring, however, can’t quite save everything: a postage stamp size sage sequined mini ($40) is probably destined for only the modelesque among us.

These prices are great, right? There is, however, a catch. Many pieces from the most recent collection have no price tag (a sign on the wall nebulously states that they’re 70% off original retail price, which isn’t much help when that price isn’t labeled). The salespeople are great: helpful without being pushy, but they’re also harried. We visited less than a half hour after opening this morning and the sale was already packed with women in various states of undress (oh yeah, there are also no dressing rooms), leaving the staff without much time to answer pricing questions.

This makes for an unfortunate case of register Russian roulette: just how much is the amazing grey draped jersey tank top with the rope racerback? What about these high-waisted white shorts redolent of yachts and Ibiza? Or the grey cotton dress with the most amazing rope-embellished cap sleeves? The good news is that when the sale items are this exciting, it’s a risk we’re okay with taking.
