This Ain't Your Mama's Blazer
, New York, NY
Break the mold when it comes to blazers (unless you’re being called to court) and go for something other than the basic black uniform. Look for unusual shapes, colors or textures – or go crazy and look for all three. The more creative your job is, the more creative of a blazer you can get away with (see: my L.A.M.B. pick). When my friend, Lilah, wanted advice on what ‘new, cute, and not-too-pricy’ pick she could buy for an upcoming interview for an art gallery, I told her a blazer was the way to go.
If you get the right one, you’ll get tons of mileage out of it because it can be dressed up or down. Brunch with your parents? Button it up over a silk blouse and wear your hair up. An after-work party with your friends? Pile on some necklaces and wear a fun T-shirt under it.
Lilah didn’t end up getting that job she’d gotten her new Theory blazer for – which yes, was a mega bummer. (I had low-fat ice cream ready for her in her favorite flavor: strawberry.) But she was able to wear that blazer out on a date, to someone’s birthday party, and then on another interview two weeks later. And that job? She got.
I don’t know that I’d say this is the best part of that story (’cause she loves her new job) but every time she wears that blazer it looks different thanks to accessories and a variety of trousers, jeans and skirts. I love when things end up paying for themselves, it’s very considerate of them.
