The Plusses of Plus Size

Lately I’ve been pondering what it means to be plus size. I’m not a plus size, but my sister is, and while some people see her as fat all I have ever seen her as is beautiful. In Spanish, gordita (“little chubby girl” or “butterball” depending on the translation) is like “sweetie” or “baby”. Traditionally, Latin men have preferred curvier women over skinny ones. Salsa skirts look better on dancers who have hips. Can you imagine one of those bony, half starved runway models dancing the merengue, shimmying when she’s got no chest to shake? I’m sorry but some things are better to left to women with assets. Besides, if you’re plus size, you know Tyra Banks will automatically have your back, and you get to be represented by gorgeous women like plus size model Chrystal Renn and singer/actress Queen Latifah.
Other good things about being plus size: you get to dress like a girl. The most flattering outfits for a plus size girl are a-line skirts, shirts with nipped waists, and jeans that are dark rinsed and boot cut. That androgynous look that always seems to snake its way on to the runways isn’t flattering on anyone, not even the skinny models its made for. Instead, put on a skirt and a blouse that you can fill out–that’s something those models can’t do.

For great plus size buys, checkout stores like Silhouette, Land’s End (especially for swimsuits) and Lane Bryant.

Como dijo Tyra Banks, ¡besa mi culo gordo!

Besitos,

Graciela
