The Octopus Queen Wears Birkenstocks, Part II

Roxie felt a wet sensation on her cheek. She opened her eyes, and found that Socrates was licking her all over her face.

“Mami? Are you ok?” Graciela asked. She bent down to help Roxie stand up. How much more humiliating could it get? Passing out on West 10th Street in Coney Island, wearing tentacles made of balloons and surrounded be people dressed like mermaids?

“I might throw up,” Roxie grumbled.

“Get her some water!” Graciela shouted. “Don’t worry, mami, after this we’re going to a nice sit down dinner with fried shrimp and everything. That sounds nice, right mami?”

“I am so going to throw up!” Roxie moaned.

“Looks like the Octopus Queen is seasick!” The announcer said, and the crowd laughed. Roxie stared at the ground. Suddenly, she noticed that she wasn’t the only one wearing birkenstocks. In a space of five minutes she managed to count three other pairs!. She also noticed some people wearing gladiator sandals and even crocs. Suddenly, Roxie didn’t feel so out of place after all.

“Here’s some water!” Roxie looked up to see Javier handing her a bottle of Fiji water.

“Thanks,” she said as she opened the bottle. She took a sip and the velvety, crystalline water cooled her parched throat. She looked at Javier, searching his face for the words he’d said earlier.

“I love you, Roxie,” he whispered.

Roxie opened her mouth to answer, but before she could, the earth began to shift beneath her. Not again, she thought, as everything around her began to swirl. She closed her eyes and fell…right into Javier’s arms.
