The Dog Park by Elizabeth Sowden

Graciela and Allison sat on a bench at the dog run in Union Square Park. Graciela’s one year old boxer, Socrates (or Socky, for short) loped back and forth, stopping every now and then to take a swat at a sleepy old Irish setter who regarded him with pity and disdain. Allison held a shivering Mitchie in her arms.

“He sure has a lot of energy,” Allison said as she stroked one of Mitchie’s tiny ears.

“Too much energy. He ate every last pair of my shoes. I had to buy new ones. See?” She stuck out her foot to show Allison her new Skecher sneakers.

“Oh, those are cute,” Allison approved, “well at least you got to go shoe shopping.”

“Well, I did get some good deals on shoes from Via Spiga Face and Richh.”

“Ooh, nice.”

“Yeah…” Graciela said, her voice trailing off.

“What’s the matter?” Allison asked.

“I don’t know…I guess it’s this whole thing with Rickey. We were just having fun and then all of a sudden he told me he loves me.”

“So what’s wrong with that?”

“Technically, nothing…”

“Technically?”

“It’s just, I’ve known Rickey forever, you know? He’s my brother’s best friend, and he was my friend for a long time too. We know everything about each other. I thought when I got to his house the other day; I’d know what I felt by the time I got there. But I didn’t. And now he’s mad at me. It’s just that there are now surprises for us, so if we love each other, there’s nothing left to do but…”

“Get married?”

“Well, yeah…but I don’t know if I want to.” Graciela buried her face in her hands. Allison stroked her hair. Suddenly all the dogs in the park started barking and howling, with Socrates’ barks standing out from the rest of the chorus. Allison looked up to see what the commotion was. She glanced around, then exclaimed, “Oh, my God!!”
