Tamarind Tribeca

When you're downtown and craving fancy Indian, Tamrind Tribeca won't be the coziest experience, but it will be delicious.

The first time I ate at the Flat Iron’s legendary Indian experience, I woke up at four in the morning, fully dressed with the lights on. The second time, I managed to get out of my stilettos and leggings but passed out in my shirt, bow-adorned headband and full face of make-up. And no, it wasn’t from boozing. There is something in the food at Tamarind that drugs me. Or maybe I’m just so blissfully happy sleep is the only proper ending.

So when I visited the bi-level 175-seater Tribeca sister, I was braced myself for a sleepy evening. But first, the space: It reminds me a bit of a yacht deck. While it’s absolutely beautiful, it’s a bit big to be comfortable. It’s not the intimate Indian experience of the original. During the day the space is drenched in sun and at night, lit like a South American getaway. More importantly, the food is equal if not a teeny bit better than the original. The lobster masala is forever my favorite. The raan e dumphket lamb – with saffron, nutmeg – and cashews make me salivate at the thought and as random as it sounds, i really like the spinach and cottage cheese. For vegetarians, Tamarind is such a great option. There are a variety of delicious meatless choices that aren’t an afterthought like those on the menus at some of the city’s other nice restaurants.

Verdict: I was out like a light by 11:30. I did however, manage to get into my pajamas, which leads me to conclude that my brain wasn’t as cozy in the new space as it was in the old. Next time I’m in the mood for fancy Indian, I might make my way back above 14th Street.
