You don’t have to live in the south — or even be from the south — to appreciate the fashionable senses at the Kentucky Derby. This annual horse race gives derby goers a prime opportunity to don their most floral and feminine dresses, oversized sunglasses, western-inspired kicks and, naturally, their snazziest sun hats.

You don’t actually have to be in attendance to get away with wearing all of the aforementioned, either. There are plenty of local viewing parties — private and public, we’re sure — that’ll allow you to channel your inner Derby darling, as well.

Even if you’re not heading to the Kentucky Derby or a viewing party, you can certainly take your spring and summer style cues from those in attendance. Here are our 6 top picks for must-have summer accessories inspired by the Kentucky Derby.

1. Sun Hats

This list would surely be remiss without a mention of extravagant sun hats. Our motto: the more flamboyant, the better. We highly recommend taking inspiration from the always classic Audrey Hepburn, whose taste in sun hats is truly unparalleled to this day. Outside of the Derby, wear your hats to your favorite park, to a garden party or even the beach.

2. Staple Sunglasses

Like ostentatious sun hats, sunglasses actually serve a utilitarian purpose: they protect you from the sun. Don’t be afraid to really play things up when it comes to your eyewear this summer; think peculiar shapes that are as classic as they are contemporary. Don’t be afraid to invest in a quality pair, either. Cheap sunglasses look cheap, and you want to appear anything but when channeling Derby fervor. We’re digging the ultra luxe options at SHAUNS California.

3. A Summery Clutch

Shoulder bags are not only cumbersome, they weigh down an otherwise light and summery ensemble. As an alternative, we recommend something ultra feminine refined. A summery clutch? Fits the bill perfectly. When it doubt, opt for a pastel or a floral print. Oh, and jewels are a definite yes.

4. Feminine Jewelry

If you’re wearing a big hat and big sunglasses, it’s a good idea to play down the jewelry element of your outfit. Don’t completely neglect it, though. We suggest tiny gold studs, a single-strand pearl necklace or a solitary gemstone on a gold ring or delicate golden chain that hangs around your neck.

5. Summer Scarf

The versatility of summer scarves know no bounds, and they’re ultra chic, to boot. You can tie your scarf around your neck, around your head, wrap it around your wrist or even tie it around the handles of your purse. Choose a color or print that complements — and doesn’t compete — with the rest of your outfit.

Six Eastern Beauty Trends Making Their Way to the U.S.A.

The Western beauty world often has its head turned toward the East, and for good reason. When it comes to beauty technology and skincare advancements, Asia is approximately 12 years ahead of the United States. For example, they were the first to introduce eyelash extensions — which is now a booming business — and were way ahead of the game in terms of natural brighteners. As you may know, they also brought us all those alphabet creams (BB, CC and DD).

Naturally, beauty companies based in the West are eager to see what Eastern gurus come up with next. To answer that very question, we went to Dr. Craig Kraffert, president of Korean skincare line Amarte and founder of DermStore.com. Dr. Kraffert is a practicing dermatologist based in California who’s always trying and researching new products and, as a result, has a strong pulse on how Eastern trends manifest stateside.

Here are six trends Dr. Kraffert says to be on the lookout for.

1. Mixologiste — AKA Extreme Multi-functionality

No matter how excellent the product, it’s no longer chic or efficient to have a product that only serves one purpose. Think eye creams or plain old cleansers or moisturizers. “Multi-functionality may have started with BB and CC creams, but now we are seeing Asian manufacturers take inspiration from completely different categories when creating new products,” said Dr. Kraffert. “Think hydrators that address five skin concerns in one, or makeup that’s designed for the face, neck, hands and body.”

2. New Antioxidants

Remember traditional antioxidants such as blueberries and acai? Forget about them. “New, proven antioxidants like gingko nut and bloodroot are emerging on the skin care scene,” said Dr. Kraffert. “Bloodroot has approximately four times the antioxidant capacity of vitamin E.” He also said that ginkgo nut is an uber-exclusive ingredient originally prescribed in The Dongui Bogam — 17th century Korean medicinal text — rich in vitamins C and E with anti-inflammatory properties, that aids fibroblast production of collagen and elastin.” If you’re interested in trying a product with gingko nut extract, check out Amarte’s Eyeconic Eye Cream.

3. Wash and Wear Deep Dermal Fillers

The quest for youthful, radiant skin is a long one. Some products miss the mark, but skincare companies are getting better and better at helping consumers achieve that ageless complexion. According to Dr. Kraffert, the buzz around deep dermal fillers — a big trend in Asia at the moment — is gaining momentum here in the United States. “Allergan has just released Voluma, a thicker and longer lasting hyaluronic acid filler for facial plumping,” he said. “The appeal behind these deep facial fillers is that they correct many signs of aging in an almost undetectable “wash and wear” manner. By replacing facial volume, the face looks much more youthful. Also, as the skin gets gently pulled out it creates a slightly lifted look.”

4. Liquid Free Cleansers

If you’re shaking your head at the thought of a dry cleanser, hear us out. “The newest, most innovative ways to cleanse include powder activated by water and solid sponges made of the Asian-cultivated Konjac root to clean pores sans soap,” said Dr. Kraffert. For example, Amarte’s Daily ExfoliPowder is a refined, daily use exfoliant cleanser that’s completely dry. To use it, all you do is wet your hands and face, shake a little bit of the powder into your hand and then work up a creamy lather. “These unconventional formulas are gaining momentum in the U.S. largely because of their convenience factor. No more worrying about TSA’s three fluid ounce rule.”

5. The Daily Ritual

“Korean women embrace a ritualistic approach to skin care, taking pleasure in a multi-step routine designed to cleanse, hydrate, rejuvenate and protect,” said Dr. Kraffert. To mimic this routine, he said that Korean skin care is sometimes sold as a multi-piece system with each product working harmoniously with the others for the best, combined result. “After a hectic day, many Americans may find that a daily ritual is calming and soothing, and that skin care systems are easier than experimenting with self-made mashups of cleansers, toners, serums and creams.”

6. Double Chin Removal via…Injection

Yep — injections in the chin may very well become a “thing” in the United States sooner than you may think. “The new ATX-101 will likely land in America this year,” said Dr. Kraffert. He explained that ATX-101 is an injection used to treat sub mental fat, which most commonly manifests itself as a double chin. “It could be the latest non-invasive trend in the lineup of no-knife fixes Americans are so crazy about.”

Creating a checklist of fashion staples isn’t some way of making everyone conform to a certain type of style. On the contrary, wardrobe staples create a foundation for every person’s wardrobe which, in turn, allows them to express themselves however they want with the other clothes and accessories they purchase.

Today we’re detailing a list of men’s wardrobe must-haves; items that will ensure he always has something to build a stylish outfit around. Whether you’re studying up for yourself, a friend, a parent or a special someone, you’ll definitely come away with some shopping inspiration. We suggest you take notes.

A White Dress Shirt

A White Dress Shirt

The crisper and whiter this dress shirt is, the better. It’s easy to layer and accessorize and goes with pretty much everything. This is a good staple for women, too. Make sure you keep your white dress shirt pressed and spotless because anything less will read sloppy.

Crew Neck Tee

Crew Neck Tee

In addition to a crisp, white dress shirt, make sure you’ve got several crew neck tees in your wardrobe, as well. Choose whatever colors you’re drawn to most. The more neutral (red, white, black, blue, brown), though, the easier they’ll be to style. Wear them under blazers, cardigans or even on their own.

Dark Denim Jeans

Dark Denim Jeans

This is another wardrobe staple that works for both sexes. Dark denim jeans that fit impeccably are timeless and, again, easy to pair with whatever else is hanging in your closet. Don’t hesitate to invest in a quality pair — just make sure they’re not embellished, as trendy items don’t have as long of a shelf life.

Chino Pants

If you’re not wearing a pair of jeans, the Chino pants are likely going to be the next article of clothing you reach for when dressing yourself in the morning. They’re classy, timeless and neutral. In other words: they are versatile and easy to style.

Fitted Blazer

Fitted Blazer

Like a fitted shirt or pair of jeans, a blazer is another one of those wardrobe staples you just can’t skip. Even if you’re unsure about how much wear it’ll get, give this one a chance, as its versatility may surprise you. You can wear it over that crisp tee or crew neck or you can even dress up a printed tee with it. Neutral colors and unembellished designs are your best bet when it comes to longevity.

A Quality Belt

The amount of times you reach for a neutral belt may astound you. Belts are such an easy way to “spice up” your outfit — a detail that shows you’ve got a sense of style, but aren’t trying too hard. Opt for a neutral, unembellished belt in both black and brown and you’ll never need to buy another belt again.

A Handsome Watch

Feel free to tap into your own style preferences with this men’s wardrobe staple. Again, since this is an essential item, we recommend investing a little bit into something that’ll last you for many, many years. When shopping for a handsome watch, think about its potential over the long term. Is this something you could pass down to your son? And your son to his son? If so, that’s the kind of show stopper watch that’ll earn you compliments and prove to be a worthy investment.

BONUS: Knee-Length Shorts

We felt the need to add one more item to our list: knee length shorts. While this one’s not a must have like the other items on our list are, they’re one of those pieces that’ll serve men ages 20 to 40 very well. We suggest buying a pair or two in neutral colors. They’re easy to dress up or down and will get you through the warm months in cool style.

Would you add or subtract anything from our list of men’s wardrobe staples? And if you’re a women, what are your thoughts on a man with excellent fashion taste? Does it make him more desirable? On the flip side, does a lack of style sense deter you from pursuing him?

10 Fashion Dos and Don'ts for Fall 2013

Fear not, for the thick and muggy air of late summer is now moving south. As we usher in fall’s cool breezes and all the wonderful things autumn entails — including bonfires, mulled wine and cable knit sweaters — it’s time to think about fall fashion. Check out this list of fall 2013 fashion dos and don’ts and abide by them to the best of your ability.

DO: Get Graphic

Channel the babes of 1960s mod when putting together outfits this fall. Think black and white graphic patterns, houndstooth, loudly colored frocks, Twiggy inspired dresses and lots of capes. You’d do alright to gain your inspiration from 50-year-old fashion glossies.

DON’T: Kill Your Feet With Painful Shoes

They say pain is beauty, but that’s not always true. Invest in comfortable kicks for fall and leave the stilettos for special occasions. For fall 2013, it’s all about quirky sneakers, chunky boots, comfy flats and sweet booties.

DO: Wear Dark, Skinny Jeans

A classic skinny jean that flatters your figure is as versatile as garments come. Skip anything that’s too embellished or flashy and instead opt for something basic. A dark skinny jean looks perfect when layered with tanks, blazers, cardigans, scarves and even skirts or dresses.

DON’T: Be Afraid of White

White after Labor Day is supposedly a grave fashion faux pas, but designers and stylists alike are bucking that maxim for fall 2013. In fact, a little white dress is a must. Pair it with silver accessories and you’re good to go.

DO: Sport Cute Hats

Whether you prefer a beanie, cozy knitwear, newsboys or fedoras, definitely accessorize with hats this fall. You won’t have a hard time finding hats this season, either. All the big designers have theirs out on display, including Tracy Reese, BCBG Max Azria and Kate Spade.

DON’T: Neglect Your Spring and Summer Frocks

Save money and get creative by transitioning your spring and summer duds into autumn. For example, a flowery frock pairs nicely with dark, thick tights and a boyfriend cardigan.

DO: Wear Metallics and Mauves On Your Nails

If you’re in the market for a few new nail polishes, make sure you load up on an earthy mauve and lots of dark metallics. Mauve is a huge trend for fall 2013, as are steampunk inspired colors. For a cohesive look, match your nail color to a piece of jewelry, accessory or even your eye makeup.

DON’T: Wear Super Tight Clothing

Ladies around the world: rejoice. There’s a time and place for bodycon dresses and clingy garments, but for the most, fall 2013 is all about comfortable, loungey apparel. Think Portland ’90s grunge meets haute couture.

DO: Wear Lots of Leather

You don’t have to be a biker babe to rock a mean piece of leather; this durable and edgy fabric can look good on any fashionista. Tone down the gruff factor by pairing your leather with softer details (such as lace or pastels) or by sticking to tiny leather embellishments, such as t-shirts with leather details, leather gloves or leather shoes.

DON’T: Forget to Play With Prints

Throw caution to the wind and mix flashy prints this season. The more unlikely the match, the better. For example, a lime green and orange floral print blouse paired with vertical black and white stripes will get you noticed in a good way. Also experiment with matching out-there prints as separates.
