Backstage with Sephora at Dennis Basso

Daily Vogue was lucky enough to talk to key make-up artist Kabuki about creating the look at Dennis Basso SS 2011 collection. This season Dennis Basso designed for an affluent, but younger woman: “She loves to go out, She travels. She does special occasion. No pants.”

For those used to the classic smoky make-up usually seen on the runway at Dennis Basso, S/S 2011 surprises – pleasantly.

“I added a modern twist to a classic Audrey Hepburn eye and was inspired by the futuristic youthful cut on the clothes from the collection”, explained key make-up artist Kabuki.

Dennis Basso SS2011While the skin was polished with a light foundation (Make Up For Ever HD Foundation), lips nude and sheer (Sephora Lipstick Palette – Dolce Nude 20, Romantic Rose 18; Sephora Ultra shine lip gloss – Perfect Nude 20), the eyes stole the show – lined with Sephora Smoky Creme Liner in matte cobalt blue, turquoise and orange. Segments of false lashes and lots of mascara were applied so the color of the liner wouldn’t be overpowering. The result: a young, fun, but polished and elegant wide-eyed pixie with flashes of color.
Other products used to complete the look: for the face – Givenchy Mister Light, Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, Sephora Blush Me (Peche Tendre 04); for the eyes – Givenchy Mister Light, Sephora Nano Eyeliner (Golden Sand 07), Sephora Mono eyeshadow (Coffee Brown), Sephora Mono eyeshadow (City Fog), Make Up For Ever False Lashes, Givenchy Eyebrow Show Pencil, Make Up For Ever Concealer Pencil.

Maybe the experts are right and the dresses were not a great success, but the make-up was …unforgettable

Halloween make-up tips go hand in hand with Fall 2009 party faces.

26 October 2009

It’s been a long time since the Fall 2009 Fashion Week, so you may have forgotten the gravity defying hairstyles and wild on eye make-up that graced the faces of models at Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Phillip Lim, Lanvin and more.
Marc Jacbos make up Fall 2009 Jem

This Halloween, you needn’t wait in line to raid the sticky pore clogging make-up section at Ricky’s. Some of the most dramatic costume effects can be achieved using colors, liners and definers you already have. Whether you plan to go as a whimsical fairy, Jem or the increasingly popular Lady Gaga, your Halloween make-up goes hand-in-hot-little-hand with Fall 2009 runway faces and your beauty purchases.

Rather than spending more money on the costume you’ll wear one night, take a peek in your cosmetic bag. If your personal collection looks shy in the color category, make your purchases by keeping in mind colors that can carry you to spring. Let experts at Mac, Sephora or Nars assist you in which bright colors will accent your skin tone and eye color. You can always tone down bright colors by adding some silver or neutral browns for everyday wear, but you cannot create more color pigment by adding more eyeshadow. So even if it seems scary, go as bright as you can.

Then Let the eighties inspire bright pink cheek streaks.  Make like Lim and decorate the bottom lashes for a little bit of rock n’ roll. Be a loud mouth with purple, red and dark colored kissers. Still unsure? Embrace your inner copy cat and go through the Fall 2009 runway pics from the designers above. Don’t worry; they’re flattered.

Kristen Bell once told InStyle Magazine, “When it comes to bathing suits, I have several by Lauren Moffat. J.Crew also has a good selection, with lots of different shapes, from string bikinis to boy-cut, that you can mix and match.”

A great way to get a revamp on your two-piece swimwear is to pair it with something else. Pairing bright separates can give you a great variety of looks. The Vix Leather Detail Bikini is in a gorgeous green, available from bloomingdale’s for $80.00. If you buy the Padded Solid Underwire Glamor Top in brown from J-crew for $48.00, you can easily pair it with the bottom from the green Vix Bikini.

Green and brown are a good color combo – but go with your instincts. Want a coral-colored hipster bottom and a yellow bandeau top? Go for it! Purple also looks great with yellow, which might be reason enough to pull out that purple string bikini you bought from Macy’s a few years back. It will seem suddenly all kinds of new.
Or, if you’re a Burberry lover – they have this vibrant blue String Bikini at Saks Fifth Avenue on SALE for $119.00. The piping trim gives it a bit of contrast, especially if you mix and match the top or bottom with a top and bottom from another pair. Getting the idea?

1. Solid String Top and Solid Ruched Hipster Shorts, both from J-crew. ($40.00 & $42.00)
2. Solid Twist-Front Top and Solid Hipster Tie-Bikini, both from J-crew.($40.00 & $38.00)

Another great tip from Kristen Bell? When packing for a vacation, “I always shove things inside my shoes; it’s dead space.” Pretty savvy advice. Plus, it’ll keep your shoes from getting smooshed!

Swimsuit Cover Up's

9 June 2008

Whether you want something handy to pull on over a bikini as you run to a corner store for a flavored water, you want to protect your skin from the sun, or you have a creepy uncle that shows up at your families’ summer home – a swimsuit cover up is a great to have.

In fact, I recommend having more than one. They’re crucial on my vacation list.If Heroes‘ hottie Milo Ventimiglia happens by my poolside and asks me to eat dinner with him and his friends, I want to be prepared.

There are several choices out there, but I narrowed it down to my top six from some of TheStylishCity.com’s favorite stores. See what you think.

1. BCBG Max Azaria Embroidered Ikat Cover Up from Nordstrom ($198.00). I love how flouncy it looks, especially the sleeves.
2. Dotti Pleated Shirt Cover Up from Macy’s ($48.00). Or, get it with pleated pockets.

1. DKNY Swimwear Dot Cover Up from bloomingdale’s ($108.00). For the glamazon in every female.

2. Milly Merano Crochet Mini Dress from Saks ($271.00). Good for petite frames. Subtly flirty.
3. Shosanna Swim Cover Up from Saks ($175.00). This is similar to the Milly one, but I wanted to include it because I love Shosanna. This is a little less virginal, and will compliment a curvy figure better.

4. Diane Von Furstenberg Harlequin Fish Cover Up from Saks ($225.00). This will enhance your bust. Plus, so pretty.
Stylishly yours,

Jessica Rae
