You don’t have to live in the south — or even be from the south — to appreciate the fashionable senses at the Kentucky Derby. This annual horse race gives derby goers a prime opportunity to don their most floral and feminine dresses, oversized sunglasses, western-inspired kicks and, naturally, their snazziest sun hats.
You don’t actually have to be in attendance to get away with wearing all of the aforementioned, either. There are plenty of local viewing parties — private and public, we’re sure — that’ll allow you to channel your inner Derby darling, as well.
Even if you’re not heading to the Kentucky Derby or a viewing party, you can certainly take your spring and summer style cues from those in attendance. Here are our 6 top picks for must-have summer accessories inspired by the Kentucky Derby.
1. Sun Hats
This list would surely be remiss without a mention of extravagant sun hats. Our motto: the more flamboyant, the better. We highly recommend taking inspiration from the always classic Audrey Hepburn, whose taste in sun hats is truly unparalleled to this day. Outside of the Derby, wear your hats to your favorite park, to a garden party or even the beach.
2. Staple Sunglasses
Like ostentatious sun hats, sunglasses actually serve a utilitarian purpose: they protect you from the sun. Don’t be afraid to really play things up when it comes to your eyewear this summer; think peculiar shapes that are as classic as they are contemporary. Don’t be afraid to invest in a quality pair, either. Cheap sunglasses look cheap, and you want to appear anything but when channeling Derby fervor. We’re digging the ultra luxe options at SHAUNS California.
3. A Summery Clutch
Shoulder bags are not only cumbersome, they weigh down an otherwise light and summery ensemble. As an alternative, we recommend something ultra feminine refined. A summery clutch? Fits the bill perfectly. When it doubt, opt for a pastel or a floral print. Oh, and jewels are a definite yes.
4. Feminine Jewelry
If you’re wearing a big hat and big sunglasses, it’s a good idea to play down the jewelry element of your outfit. Don’t completely neglect it, though. We suggest tiny gold studs, a single-strand pearl necklace or a solitary gemstone on a gold ring or delicate golden chain that hangs around your neck.
5. Summer Scarf
The versatility of summer scarves know no bounds, and they’re ultra chic, to boot. You can tie your scarf around your neck, around your head, wrap it around your wrist or even tie it around the handles of your purse. Choose a color or print that complements — and doesn’t compete — with the rest of your outfit.
