Eighteen of New York City’s top independent designers will come together for the Independent Designer Pop Shop, a six day pop-up shop at Chelsea Market. Items are 25% to 75% off regular retail prices. We spoke to co-organizer Raoul Calleja about why independent designers need to stick together and some of the sale’s best items.

The Vogue City: Tell me about the Independent Designer Pop Shop. What do visitors need to know?
Raoul: It’s essentially a six-day pop-up shop taking place from June 22 through the 27 at Chelsea Market. We’ve put together a group of great designers, who are all local and make all their own things. We’re going to be offering clothing, jewelery, accessories, and soap. The soap is from a company called Australian Scent – they’re originally from Australia, but they’re based out of New York.

The Vogue City: What was the inspiration behind the Independent Designer Pop Shop?
Raoul: As designers (Raoul runs Vernakular Photo Designs, a line of clothing incorporating photos), my co-organizer Barbara Wilkinson (of Over The Moon Jewel) and I wanted to create a venue that was in line with the independent spirit of New York City. We know a lot of designers that don’t have a good outlet to sell their products to consumers. Sure, there are a lot of shopping events, but they all seem to cater to people who want to drink and get things for really cheap. We wanted to give people an outlet where they can showcase what they make. It’s an important event – it’s organized by designers and for designers. It’s not a money-making thing, just a way to showcase the good products we know we produce.

The Vogue City: What’s the price point?
Raoul: The prices will start at $20 and go up to maybe $600 for leather handbags. We also have some designers who do custom work with gold, so those prices can go higher.

The Vogue City: What are some of the sale’s best bets?
Raoul: Selma Karaca makes some beautiful dresses that are very well-made and original. In fact, Esperanza Spalding wore one of Selma’s dresses when she won Best New Artist at the Grammys this year. I also love Corrente Handbags – high-end leather handbags with unique designs and nice stuff. We have a bunch of really great jewelry people: Vale Jewelry has some really nice solid gold pieces – very elegant.

The Vogue City: Will this be just a one-time event?
Raoul: Hopefully not! If this event goes well, we certainly hope to do a few more. Eventually, we’d love to do three or four a year.
