Weekends at the beach, lounging poolside and lazy Central Park summer Sundays work as magical destressors but take a serious toll on our tresses, leaving hair dry, brittle and stripped of color. Blondes’ hair turns green while brunettes lose shine, their color fading to a mousy brownish grey. Every hour in the sun’s harsh UVA rays is the equivalent to an extra blow-drying session. The Vogue City scoured Sephora, the web and talked with New York’s leading salon to bring you both restorative and protective solutions for your summer strands.

Chlorine tainted tresses? A simple solution for too much time in the pool is an economical and easy mixture of baking soda and shampoo. The baking soda neutralizes chlorine’s harsh effect, takes out the green tint and brings hair back to a soft and manageable state. Combine 1/3 cup shampoo with 4 tablespoons of baking soda for a hair-saving mixture that can be used several times.

Is there hair sunscreen? Well, sort of. We have found the best hair protectant from the sun is fekkai leave in conditioner Frederic Fekkai’s Marine Summer Hair Beachcomber Leave-In Conditioner. For $23, the marine peptides, sea algae and a UV shield keep tresses safe from the sun. The AquaNutrients hydrate, keeping hair healthy and shiny.

Prevention prevails. The only fail-proof method of protecting your lovely locks is to keep them out of the sun’s harsh rays and block the chemically chlorine from soaking in. Wear a hat or wrap a trendy scarf around your hair to protect it from the sun. For protection from chemicals, rinse your hair in regular water and slather on some conditioner before jumping in the pool. This allows the strands to soak up the clean fresh water rather than the harsh chemicals. As tedious as it seems, you’ll be happy that evening when you’re staring back at healthy, shiny hair.
