Sulfur for Skin? Let's Do It!

What does sulfur do in beauty products that makes it an popular ingredient? I find myself asking this after using a product with sulfur and achieving fantastic results. There was a time when it never occurred to me to care what was in beauty products – fancy packaging or a luxury label was more than enough for me to open my wallet. But not anymore. I’ve transformed into curious Alice down the rabbit hole to the wonderlands of Sephora and Barneys. (When I entered a Sephora for the first time, I truly did feel like Alice stumbling into a magical wonderland, no lie.)

Sulfur basically works as an exfoliater, cleaning up dead cell debris. What sulfur can do for your skin is to treat it by tightening, clearing the pores, and shrinking acne. Products react differently on different people, so if you haven’t had luck with certain brands and their ingredients, try something with sulfur. Whether you want to keep your pores clear, or you have problems with pimples, I suggest trying one of these sulfur-infused products.

For more information about sulfur I recommend this article from The Journal of Drugs in Dermotology: The Use of Sulfur in Dermatology (warning, it’s long).
The Malin + Goetz Acne Treatment ($22.00) at Barney’s New York has 10% active sulfur.

Murad Clarifying Cleanser ($26.00) at Sephora is a popular product.

Philosophy On a Clear Day Super Wash for Oily Skin ($18.00) at Sephora is meant for daily use, and by default: those who crave clear skin. (Don’t we all?)

I’m going to remember this easily as ‘SS’ (sulfur for skin! nice bumpersticker idea, no?) the next time I’m buying skin treatment products.

Much love,

Sofia
