So Long Sequins

This season's glitz shows up in more subtle metallics mixed with matte.

In fashion, as in life, all that glitters fades away. Frances Tulk-Hart, super-stylist and fashion photographer, said so of sequins in the Sunday Styles a couple weeks back. “Nowadays it seems almost sad, like a tarted-up party girl, drunk and dancing long after everyone has gone home. ‘Sequins in general are done and done,’ stylist Frances Tulk-Hart said.” And when Frances Tulk-Hart makes declarative statements in the Times, we listen…and report. You can rock the leather and the lace, but for crying out loud, put those sequins away. Say so long to spring’s sequined micro mini even if you’re friends are telling you otherwise. You won’t be able to wear your sequin leggings or mini skirt but once before you retire them for the next six seasons – at least. So save thine dough darling. Fortunately, you’ll still have something to shimmy in as this season’s glitz shows up in more subtle metallics mixed with matte.

Elise Overland Fall 2009 metallics
Hesitant to rearrange your closet based on the words of one (albeit wondrous) woman, go ahead then and scroll through the fall 2009 look books to confirm. You won’t find a solid sequin in sight save H&M’s long sleeved sequin mini dress. Unfortunately, that means you shouldn’t purchase the Alexander McQueen sequin blazer or sequin leggings that posted in yesterday’s Gilt sale. No means no! Instead, focus your inner disco queen on softer, black-tinted or colored metallics like the feebly flashy pieces from Elise Overland (above). A touch of colored metallic can spice up your outfit but appear more polished and less gauche than the dated sequins.

I bet you though that sequins will be back within three years, so if you have the $$ don’t worry about spending them them on the Alexander McQueen sequin blazer
