Save Money AND Keep Your Pooch Happy!

With the bottom falling out of the stock market (and falling, and falling), it’s easy to look at your expenses and panic. Many people are cutting back in a number of areas across the board, but I often feel that my pet shouldn’t have to be one of those “areas.” To a lot of us, our pets are like our kids!

Still – just as a parent of a human child would likely cut back on unnecessary expenses, sometimes necessity dictates that we scale back our lifestyle a bit. Here are a few creative ways you can do that, and we bet your pup won’t even know the difference!

1.  Re-evaluate any pet health plans you might have. If you have pet insurance, look at the premiems and the effective savings. Obviously you’d still want your pooch to be protected, so it might be worth it to hang on to the insurance. One option is to switch to catastrophy protection, but give up the other benefits, which is typically a lot cheaper.

I’m reevaluating my pet insurance right now and – since they’ve denied a lot of my claims – considering if the monthly fee I pay has paid for itself in terms of reimbusements.

2. Consder dog food sources. Buying in bulk is almost always cheaper, and it’s easy to do it online. You don’t have to worry about how to get a big bag home, or where to get it in the first place. And you won’t have to worry about running out for a loooooong time!

3. Cut back on pet care. Do you work long hours and take your pooch to a day care? Do you have a dog walker? Are these expenses ratcheting up? Of course if you do work a lot your pup needs exercise and you wouldn’t want to deprive them of that! But there might be more economical ways to do this. Can you share a dogwalker with other people in your  building and get a deal for doing so? Does your day care offer pre-paid discounts on packages for multiple days?

Thinking about relatively little ways you can tweak your spending when it comes to your pets can add up to a decent sized savings each month!
