Robb & Hugo Sample Sale Review (12/14)

Let’s face it – now that the whole city’s hit winter hibernation mode, comfort is far and away the most appealing characteristic clothes can possess. That attitude could be a one-way ticket to Schlubtown, but fortunately, Robb and Hugo is here to make comfortable look good. “Our line is about comfort,” Robb and Hugo designer Angela Kim tells us, “but it’s tailored and it looks clean and modern.”

It sure does: Robb and Hugo’s clothes are sexy, yet casual – a sort of American version of the effortlessly pulled together Parisian mademoiselle aesthetic. A burgundy t-shirt dress, made of the softest jersey imaginable, sports zippers down the sides of the shoulders, which can be kept up for a bold fashion statement or unzipped for a wilder look. Though the dress retails for $165, it’s available at the sample sale for just $50. Even cheaper: it’s available in black as a tee for a mere $25. The good buys don’t stop there, though: a grey and black shirt with stripes running every which way is very carnival chic, the softest thing this reporter has ever touched, and a steal for just $45. A runner up for softness is a plaid flannel shirt in various muted shades of green with button details at the sleeve – just $45 marked down from $158.

Kim’s own favorite item is the one pictured. “These jeans – well, some people call them jeggings, some people call them knit jeans – are one of the best pieces here. They give the appearance of jeans, but they’re super comfortable. They’re $65 here, but they retail for $175.” Not too shabby for a wardrobe staple favored by celebrities like Christina Aguilera and Ashley Greene.

A few things to know before you go: there are no dressing rooms, though there is a space in the back for those who want to try clothes on. Discover and American Express are not accepted. If you’re cool with those caveats, make a beeline to Robb and Hugo for clothes cozy enough for hibernation, but chic enough for the moment you remember that hey! you live in New York City and you should really go out. Just call it the best of both worlds.
