Platforms are Out!...Aren't They?

Have you seen the cover of this week’s New Yorker? It depicts a scene of a village where everyone lives in a shoe. Two women in frocks and aprons stand on a winding cobblestone path, brooms in hand, while one of the women points to a giant, neon pink platform shoe with narrow windows, some sort of office tower of luxury high rise, looking like the end of civilization as we know it.

I have to say, I don’t know what this means. Roxie told me it’s sociological: “It’s about how developers destroy rural communities.”

“But what about the shoes, Roxie? What do the shoes mean?”

Roxie said it was just a play on the nursery rhyme, but I am convinced that the shoes mean more than that, I mean, it is the style issue, after all. But what I can’t figure out is whether platforms are in or out. Manolo, the wildly popular shoe blogger (who is not Manolo Blahnik, but gleefully capitalizes on the name) says they’re out, and HIS source is USA Today. However, an article in the Chicago Tribune from a couple of months back says that they are in (though most of the readers’ comments conveyed a strong distaste for platforms). Plus, in this issue of the New Yorker, there is a Nieman Marcus ad that shows a model wearing an olive green dress with matching platform shoes. So what does this mean? Have ballet flats kicked platforms in the curb or are they locked in a ferocious pas de deux?

To me it doesn’t really matter. I don’t wear shoes just because they’re trendy. It’s hard to pull of platforms without looking like a hooker, and personally I don’t think they’re that sexy. And though I find flats comfortable, and a good go-to shoe for work, I definitely don’t find them as stylish as pumps. I mean, it’s all a matter of taste. One must take every new trend with a grain of salt, and anyone who wears things they don’t really like just because they are trendy, well, I feel kinda bad for that person. But I would like to know, just for the record, whether or not platforms are on the way out. Anyone?

Besitos,
Graciela
