Paris Fashion and NYC Fashion = True Fashion Love

Cecile Tiramani is an intern at TheVogueCity.com, and at age 23, she has a steady grasp on fashion. Perhaps it is because she is from Paris, France? I talked to Cecile about French fashion vs. New York City fashion. She was kind enough to send along pictures of her favorite brands, and the links to those shops are included if you’d like to shop the sites.

TheVogueCity (TVC): I have grown up associating berets with the French. Do French people actually wear berets, or is it more of an American stereotype? (I think they’re rather stylish!)

Cecile (C): In winter, followers of fashion love to wear stylish hats. Young people are also fond of wool hats. I have noticed that last summer lots of men and women wore Panama’s and straw hats.

TVC: For me as a teen in the 90’s, I remember popular trends like: mini backpacks, the sky blue Hard Candy nail polish, midriff baring tops, flannel shirts layered over tanks, and loose floral baby doll dresses. Can you name three or four different style trends you liked as a teen in France?

C: Nowadays, the latest trend in fashion is large leather bags. Bags from Longchamp, Vanessa Bruno, and Gerard Darel are very hip and trendy in Paris. The most popular Parisian brands are Sandro, Maje, Manoush and Zadig & Voltaire. Fripperies are more and more famous and hyped. Low boots are very fashionable, as are high-heeled shoes with a ‘multi-buckle’ and ballet flats from Repetto. Colette is a very popular shop in France for the world of fashion.

TVC: Large bags have been very popular in the states, too. However I know that right now the states are making a shift to smaller satchels and focusing on shoes – do you know if that is happening in France as well?

C: Yes it’s true, it’s begun to be the same in France. But it’s more uncommon than in America. French women, especially the Parisian girl, always has a smaller satchel when they get out for a party or at restaurant – but they prefer large leather bags for every day.

TVC: What would be the ideal outfit for a 20-year-old woman going on a professional job interview in Paris?

C: It depends in which area you work, but a classic cut non-revealing skirt suit from a classic brand such as Chanel is always good. If you work in fashion you could wear a non-traditional outfit but you have to be modest, so you could wear fashion accessories and colors.

TVC: What do you think the main differences between Paris fashion and NYC fashion are? Is there a different approach to fashion in these cities?

C: In my opinion, NYC fashion is more sexy than Paris fashion. French dresses are more modest but more classy (Paul Ka or Comptoir des Cotonniers for example) than American ones. It goes without saying that in NYC people with different “looks” and tastes respect each other. No mockery, no sharp critics. Everybody gets dressed as they want without worrying about other people!
