Owning Your Space

When our very own Mirela told me that she was moving and she needed to get rid ofcashmerefringe.jpg 60% of the things she owned (not shoes, but home decor) I didn’t actually believe or. Or, at least – I didn’t want to believe her. I felt a fleeting feeling to run to my closet and pet my large collection of winter scarves. Which isn’t weird at all, right? I know I have too many, but I like them all. But sometimes, we need to make room for new things. And sometimes, we just need to eliminate clutter. I hate clutter. And it’s always forming.

One day, I have one Lucky Magazine on the table. A week later, it’s become a pile of the latest fashion and entertainment magazines – all ready to fall to the ground with one elbow-bump. That’s evil clutter, right there! Evil clutter that must be killed!

Well, I’m not sure about how to consolidate all of your stuff other than to suggest big, pretty boxes! The one nice thing about moving is that you do get a fresh start. Even if you aren’t moving, buying some new things for your home (and a little rearranging) can make things seem different – new – interesting. I don’t know about you, but I’m constantly rearranging things, even just shelves. I also think this is the reason I am always buying make up, because I’m a little bit addicted to the new packaging of each purchase. Buying something that will last longer than a lipstick means you can spend more money, though.

What are some nice ways to spruce up a place? You cannot, and I mean cannot, go wrong in buying a Solid Cashmere Throw. I like the one by Sofia Cashmere ($375.00) at Saks Fifth Avenue. As the name implies, throw this somewhere – over the back of a chair, couch, or the end of the bed.aurel.jpg

When you are in a new environment sometimes what you crave is something that makes it feel ‘homey’ – but more than that, that makes it feel like you. Because it may take time to paint the walls the color you like, and the ugly gold bird wallpaper is going to take a whlie to tear tear – but at least you can make some changes without any hard labor.

Scent can enhance a room, or an entire house/apartment. With over 30 hours of burn time, you may want to try a D. L. & Co. candle. You can find them at Barney’s.

Want a quick update that’s more permanent? Buy a new overhead light fixture. The Aurel Light Fixture ($225.00) at Neiman Marcus has the simple-yet-elegant thing down pat.

As Alexis will tell you, dogs mark their territory, and we do too – just in different ways. Mirela, I hope these suggestions will help you a little!
Here’s to living in sublime style,

Jessica Rae
