Noise Cancelling Headphones: Silent Sanctuary or Scam?

Trying to get any work done when your next door neighbor’s subwoofer is rattling your wall is next to impossible. Same goes for trying to sleep on a plane when the 2 year old two seats over is screaming for another apple juice. Ear plugs are an option, but they have a decible reduction of 30 at most, and that still allows most subwoofers and shrill baby voices seep in. Really, how much protection can you expect from something you get for $3.99 at Rite Aid? If you want a real solution to the noise problems in your life, consider investing in noise cancelling headphones. Noise cancelling headphones are designed to block out ambient noise and seal in crystal clear sound, so you can listen to Kelly Clarkson’s new album without disruption. You can also use them just to seal out noise, so that you get something priceless: silence. If you do decide to go for noise cancelling headphones, be prepared to pay: the Bose Quiet Comfort noise cancelling headphones will cost you up to $400. Its a lot of money, but real peace doesn’t come cheap. Avoid the “noise cancelling” headsets that are small and have just the box on the cord that filters noise when you turn it on. They reduce noise only slightly plus they break easily, the higher end ones are a much better investment. If $400 is too much flow for you to fork over, opt for the Panasonic model. It folds for travel and will cost you up to $180. Still too much? Consider buying them second hand. A pair of Bose headphones is bound to turn up on Craigslist from time to time–just make sure they work before you fork over the cash.
