If you thought the teased updos were just another nod to the 80’s, think again. Designers – apparel and beauty alike – are influenced by the mood of the people, and for the past year, the people have felt small, impotent and powerless. Not to mention poor. The downtrodden shift caused the sale of red lipstick to skyrocket. Next up? Our hair. Fasten your seat belt low and tight and grab your Aqua Net for the next best way to spice up your look for less.

Big hair makes us taller and delusional more powerful during a time when very much is out of our control. Designers like Rodin and Sass & Bide and celebs like Nicole Kidman teased and sprayed and teased some more to achieve mile high hair dos on the Fall 2009 runways in March. This season’s hair dos might be a bit much for the office (unless you work at Vogue), but will great for holiday parties. High hair makes last year’s little black dress feel new again for the cost of a bottle of hair spray. There are several versions, but all you need is a hair brush and bottle of hair spray. Then tease, spray, tease, spray and smooth over. But not too smooth. These are Gwen Stefani boufs ladies. These are less reserved and more rock ‘n roll.

A couple practice rounds might help and are a good idea especially if you are planning on wearing it to a party. I repeat: A couple practice rounds are necessary. If you mess it up, your hair is a teased rat net disaster that you have to rewash and blow. Or wear a hat.
