Lucite: It's Not Just For Strippers Anymore!
, New York, NY
It wouldn’t be the first time fashion borrowed from the, er, industry of adult entertainment, I mean, just look at anything by Baby Phat. But this time designers have managed to take something that is a mainstay of strippers’ wardrobes–the lucite shoe–and turn it into something that is decidedly un stripperly. These are NOT the clear plastic platforms you see on the feet of women who get dizzy on aluminum poles. The new thing is to have a lucite heel–just the heel–and an upper made of leather. The most obvious example (you’ll see it all over the web if you google “lucite heels”) is the shoe Anna Sui presented at New York fashion week: a metallic leather shoe with lucite heels that say “strut” rather than “strip”. I didn’t much like her collection, but these shoes are kinda cool.
Of course, there are other designers who are doing the lucite heel thing and they’re shoes are available right now for online purchase. The thing is, though, that if you want the lucite heel without the cheap Buffalo Wings Night and Billy’s Topless look, you’re gonna hafta pay. Like at least a hundred bucks. Not because the materials in the shoes are expensive–you’re basically paying for the thought process of the person who had to design a shoe with lucite that didn’t look whorey. BCBGirls, Report, Miu Miu, and Stuart Weitzman all have shoes out with lucite heels. Additionally, Baby Phat makes a “sexy ski bunny” boot with a lucite heel, that I have to admit is kind of cute…if you’re wearing a parka with nothing underneath…
Besitos,
Graciela

I have a pair of lucite shoes. They are stripper shoes indeed. I can’t walk in them any more though. Sigh.
