Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is fully underway at this point, and one of the most striking things for us about this season’s event is its interactivity. The organizers and those involved behind the scenes have really capitalized on new technologies, from smart phones to social media.

Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week Vera Wang Live FeedThe first New York Fashion Week took place in 1943, an era when the telephone was still a novelty and the first true commercial television networks were still some five years away from going on air across America. How things have changed. Today netbooks, macs and smartphones – most notably the iPhone – are ubiquitous, especially among those of us who like to keep up appearances.

This is Fashion Week after all; if you have an old piece of junk cell phone it won’t exactly compliment that expensive dress very well, so we’re pretty sure the quality of gadgets is up there with the quality of clothes in Manhattan right now.

With a view to taking advantage of this new age of tech-wielding, Facebook-checking, twitter-updating event-goers, those involved with the coverage of New York Fashion Week have stepped up their game and made this the most interactive festival of fashion to date.

However, it isn’t those attending the festival who they have made most effort to grab hold of –  it’s those who won’t be be able to attend any or every event, but who wish that they could be there. That’s right, live streaming is the order of the day at New York Fashion Week this season. It’s so hot right now, you could say.

News2Know is one website offering coverage of all the big shows “so you don’t have to.” (We know, how kind of them). Once you sign up, which is free, you’ll have access to all of their coverage, including both pre-packaged video with commentary from the designers and complete videos of entire shows. Next up is Tory Burch on Tuesday!

While News2Know focuses primarily on edited, pre-recorded footage – which is great if you want to catch up – it won’t give you the feeling of really being there. Of course you could argue that neither will a live streaming service, but at least it will come a little closer to doing so! One such service is offered by Livestream who are covering Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in association with Milk Made. You can access their Fashion Week stream here. They also have a replay feature if per chance you miss out on seeing your favorite show.

Livestream provides a pretty comprehensive streaming service, but our favorite online discovery of this Fashion Week has been LiveRunway on YouTube, presented by Maybelline (so it has to be good, right?).

YouTube has been overshadowed of late by many new social sites and innovations, but when it comes down to it it’s the most easily accessible of all video sites, and it now features live streaming capability to boot. Best of all, there’s no irritating sign up process that’s going to leave you with a bucket load of “newsletters” in your inbox.

The LiveRunway YouTube page features a realtime Twitter feed, polls and photographs. It’s also very easy to navigate, and the streaming quality is fast and clear. So yeah, LiveRunway is definitely the number one way to enjoy New York Fashion Week, short of actually attending that is.

Whether you’re there in person or in spirit (read: watching online), make the most of what’s left of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Soon it will all be over for another six long, wintry New York months!
