Haute Hippie Samples Sale Review 4/19
, New York, NY
Haute Hippie‘s current sale is almost the definition of hit or miss. It’s a true sample sale, which means the size selection is small, and some of the samples aren’t in great condition, particularly for the price. However, there are some truly great deals to be had here, particularly if you’re a skinny Minnie.
Let’s start with the misses. A drapey cream mini with an embellished waist is pleasantly reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, but it’s also a little dingey and looks for all the world like something you could buy at one of the nameless cheapo stores on Canal Street. For $100, skip it. A complicated black and white strapless tulle number seems okay for $70, but the poufiness of the skirt takes it from sophisticated to figure skater faster than you can say Katarina Witt. We admire the idea of a crystal covered bolero ($70), but it’s possibly unwearable in terms of both style and comfort (seriously, the thing must have weighed ten pounds).
For every miss, however, there’s a bargain to be had. An amazing cream sheer blouse with heavily sequin-embellished sleeves looks like cut-rate Balmain – not bad for $60. A hunter green fringe and suede 40s-looking dress ($100) is a great statement piece and would look perfect on an hourglass figure. Do you have Blake Lively legs? Show them off with a teeny-tiny itsty-bitsy miniskirt completely covered in white feathers ($70). Minis in general are strong here, with a whole rack of the short stuff (covered in sequins of every color of the rainbow) prominently displayed. The best bet of the whole sale, however, has got to be an olive green leather mini studded with grommets. Tough yet sexy, it’s an absolute steal at $70 – a deal well worth searching out.
