Gwyneth, Mary-Kate, and Now Me (and Maybe You)
I can’t be sure my legs will be looking as great as Gwyneth Paltrow’s do at her age. So I have to make the most of them at the time that is now. Not just now-ish, not next Summer, not in a couple years, NOW.
“This is my current style inspiration,” I told Elizabeth last night over IMs when I linked her to a picture of Mary-Kate Olsen on Style.com. In the picture, Mary-Kate is wearing a short vintage Halston dress and her legs look long, lean, and somehow gleaming. I have zero idea how you make your legs gleam (magic or diamond dust maybe). But the first step has got to be to really show lots of leg.
“Are you sure you want to follow in the footsteps of an Olsen twin? Not the best track record!$” That was Elizabeth’s text retort. I’m pretty sure that the ‘$’ was a typo (she tends to type while snacking on carrot sticks – her favorite non-guilty treat) but perhaps it could be a subconscious signal to remind me that every style impulse I have cannot justify going out and buying something. I’m not made of money, or gleaming legs. But I won’t let this stop me. When I typed to Liz, “Just you wait,” she probably didn’t know what I meant at the time.
But now I can show her. And showing is better than telling. At least that’s the belief I’ve subscribed to ever since I heard about Britney Spears using an umbrella to attack a car. (I needed to see a picture to believe THAT.)
Mini dresses to the rescue, my darlings. (Of course, I’m not picking anything TOO short, because if you actually have to move in it, then you’re screwed.)
