For Fur or Fur Foe?

The debate over pro vs. anti fur is one of fashion’s hot button issues, right along side eating disorders and pressures on models to be super skinny. Personally, I’m not overly passionate either way when it comes to fur. I think that at times fur is frivolous and it does cause unnecessary harm to animals, but I don’t think anyone has the right to throw paint on someone for wearing fur. Fashion aside, fur is warm. For people living in cold climates, fur is a necessity. In Russia, everyone wears fur. When that icy, arctic wind starts blowing, nothing keeps it from slicing through your bones like a heavy fur coat. Synthetic fabrics just don’t cut it. I just don’t think it’s fair to impose PETA-esque rules on people living in cold places.
On the other hand, if you are living in New York you can easily get by with a goose down coat, and if you’re in Beverly Hills, you don’t need fur, period. I’ll admit that a fur trimmed coat is attractive, but from far away, a well made coat with fake fur looks just as good. A coat made entirely of fur just looks so ostentatious if you ask me, so “old money”. I don’t think it’s very fashion forward at all. I mean, if you want to look like Anna Karenina…well I guess that’s fine, if you’re in St. Petersburg (Russia, not Florida), or Anchorage, or anywhere else it’s cold…give me a break. You don’t need that foxfur coat. Wear a sweater.

All I really want to say is, no matter where you are on the spectrum, you have to respect other people’s lifestyle choices. Fur wearers: Be reasonable. Don’t wear fur if you really don’t need it. And fur haters: Be respectful. You may hate fur, but you can’t force your beliefs on other people. Don’t throw paint. You’re only hurting your own cause.
