Floating in Floral Chiffon

I have a mental picture of myself stepping through dew-soaked grass at dawn, holding a tiny marshmallow-white kitten in my arms. In this image I’m wearing a floral chiffon dress in shades of of pink and white, and I’m taking careful steps towards a mailbox at the end of a winding driveway.

Back in reality, there are some problems with that idea. You see, the only way I’m up at dawn is if I never went to sleep, in which case I’m in pajamas. While I’m lucky enough to have a kitten (or at least to be babysitting one), she’s mostly colored a dark gray (she’s also trying to climb on my head right now). And my mailbox is attached to where I live, so I never travel far to get bills, catalogs, and the always appreciated snail mail from friends and family.

But I know I’ll still look nice in some floral chiffon apparel when the snow finally melts away. Floral chiffon is being embraced for the new 2008 spring season. And I’m ready to let the trend embrace me.

Although I’d been picturing a pink and white dress, when I saw this (#1) peachy/cream piece by Jovovich-Hawk from Barneys, I was enamored. If I pair this with one of the oversized belted cardigans I got this winter, and a pair of leather tan knee-high boots, I can wear this before it’s time for sandals. And once it is sandal season, I can see myself wearing this to a family brunch, or for a day trip to an art museum.

If I wanted to get a floral chiffon dress that had more pop, I’d get one with bright colors, like the Catherine Malandrino Chiffon Floral Trapeze Dress from Bergdorf Goodman (#2). I love that it has a halter neckline that will leave your shoulders bare. I welcome the feeling of a nice breeze against my shoulders, especially when the sun leaves a soft whisper-kiss of a tan. Just make sure to use sunblock, no matter what you’re wearing this summer.

Of course, I don’t want to wear dresses every day because I like to mix things up and be my own personal stylist (I charge myself very low rates!) so a top or blouse would be nice, too. I like this one by Rebecca Taylor (#3). The punch/pink gemstone color of this floral chiffon top is feminine, accented nicely by a floral detail that blooms at the bust. The cut is modern though, utilizing a jewel neckline. I just wish they had it in more colors because I’d probably want to buy one in each.

Ciao for now,

Jessica
