First Date by Elizabeth Sowden

Roxie’s red Motorazr scooted across her desk, buzzing angrily like a wasp. She snatched it up and answered it.

“Hello?” She asked, in a low voice. She didn’t want her boss, or worse, Kelly, the airheaded receptionist, to hear her.

“Roxie? Its Javier.”

“Oh,” she said, her face turning cold, “hi.”

“So I was wondering…would you want to catch a movie at the Angelika tonight?”

Roxie loved the Angelika. She liked to call in sick and see movies on weekday mornings when the theater was empty and she could eat cheesecake and popcorn with extra butter without shame.

“Um, what movie?”

“I was thinking, Teenage Witches of Norfolk…?”

It was like he had googled her and read everything she had ever posted on Blogger. He knew her weakness for British indie movies full of drugs and senseless acts of vandalism.

“Sure, I’d love to see that.” She didn’t ask him if Graciela had told him about the movie.

“Great, I’ll call back with movie times.”

“Ok.”

When Roxie hung up, she suddenly felt the full force of her shock. She had a date. With Javier, the next Latino superstar…the Motorazr let out an earsplitting bleat, letting her know that it needed to be charged. She took the charger out of her backpack and plugged it in . She kept her cellphone charger in her backpack along with a Bluetooth headset that she never used–she felt to o selfconscious to walk around with it on her ear.

Roxie’s extension flashed red. She picked it up. “Yes?”

Kelly, the brainless receptionist said, “Roxie, Mr. Bradford wants to see you in his office.”
