Faceoff: Patent Leather vs. Metallic Leather
Patent Leather vs. Metallic Leather? Is this really something we should be debating in the summer time? Both sound like something you stick to when you’re sitting in hot car. And as far as shoes go, they add up to sticky, sweaty feet. But if you take that out of the equation what you have left is a question of fashion. What’s really in? The magazines would have you believe that it’s all about shoes in metallic silver, but the streets–and stores–tell a different story. Personally I love the idea of silver shoes, but unless the shoes have a mirror like shine, many silver shoes actually look pretty dull.
On the other hand, patent leather always has a high sheen. What’s more, it comes in a whole rainbow of colors. (I have a pair of pumps in Day Glo pink that I wouldn’t part with even in a flood.) Additionally, there are patent leather versions of all of this season’s trendy shoes: patent leather ballet flats, patent leather wedges, patent leather espadrilles. Ok, I know I’ve addressed the patent leather espadrille already. Not my favorite. But the patent leather ballet flats are so adorable. And Ralph Lauren makes a wedge slide with a patent leather outsole that is incredibly stylish, and comes in bright colors like fuschia and orange.
However, if you do decide to go for something in silver, I like the silver ballet flat from Piperlime. Also Steve Madden makes a very sexy silver pump–excuse me, patent leather silver pump, which looks great. There’s the loophole: I give silver patent leather an a plus! It has the shine that some of the other metallic leather silver shoes lack.
