Expert Advice: "How do I make my long hair fancy?"

Found4less has just introduced a brand new feature to the site, we now let you ask questions and will feature you – our readers, as we answer them. You can check out the form: here. (We are aware of the mistakes on the page, bear with us and you might just get a cookie. We were too excited, we just had to get this up!)

Our inaugural question comes from Madison A. (16) from NC. She told us that she has an upcoming special occasion, where she’ll be wearing a beautiful red dress. She is having some very specific hair troubles.

Question: I need fancy hair. Last year I won homecoming princess (the step below queen…) and this year I’m handing off the crown, which involves more dresses (yay!) but also fancy hair (boo =[)

Most curled hair styles tend to make my face look fat, but if you can come up with something, I’ll definitely try it. I’d rather not cut my hair for this, so if that could be avoided, it would be much appreciated. I’d also rather have my hair down, rather than up, so…yeah.

Answer: I love that your hair is so long and I think it’s wonderful that you want to show it off. Fancy hair doesn’t mean it has to be an up-do. Also, fancy up-dos are harder to do, or will often cost a pretty penny! Long hair is a great way to go for events.

One option is to go sleek and simple. Sleek hair looks fancy. What you need for this is a straightening iron. If you don’t have one, I’m sure one of your friends has one. If you aren’t familiar with this process, I recommend using a straightening product on your hair. You apply it when your hair is damp. Once you dry and straighten your hair (I suggest pinning it up with clips as you straighten sections since you have so much hair) you can part it in the middle or on the side. Gwyneth Paltrow has always done this well.

Another way to give yourself an instantly updated look is to change your part.
From there, you can buy some hair shine serum so your hair is really like a whole accessory of its own. Then you can focus on some smoky eyes with a nude glossy lip. Or, wear lots of mascara on your upper lashes, and red lip gloss – since you also mentioned your dress is red.

Another option is to pull half of your hair (the front/top half) up and back and securing it with a pretty clip. You can use a curling iron to softly curl under the ends. Normally I would suggest leaving some face-framing pieces in the front, but because a your hair is so long that wouldn’t look right.

A variation on that is to secure your hair first with half of it up (a black hairband would be fine for this), and then twist that section into a small bun on the back of your head, using bobby pins. Then you can put something pretty there, like a floral flower hairclip that’s anchored to the side of the bun, or stick in some hairsticks. Tomorrow I am going to feature some hairsticks in our accessories section.

I do want to tell you that it’s very possible that the reason you think curled hairstyles make your face look larger is because the curls themselves are so large, and because your hair is not layered. I cannot tell you how amazing layers are. I have always had thick hair, and long hair. So believe me – layers are a God send. They lighten your hair and give it movement without shortening it. There are different types of layers. What I would suggest for you are overall long layers in your hair, including some pieces that frame your face.

If you choose to do this, having curled hair will be no problem. It won’t hang so heavily, and it’ll taper off in the layers, creating a slimming effect. I’m including a picture of Emmy Rossum with curled hair so you can see how layers look when they’re curled.

I hope this helped you, Madison!
