Espadrilles: From Peasant Wear to High Fashion

Hey, did you know that espadrilles have been manufactured in Barcelona, Spain, since the 14th century? I just read it on wikipedia! Crazy, huh? They used to be shoes for peasants and now they’re being made by Andre Assous and Michael Kors. The word espadrille is a French word, but it comes from the Catalan word espart (esparto in Spanish), a word for the tough grass that grows in the Mediterranean and used for rope. You really do learn something new every day.

Steve Madden is making some very chic espadrilles. My favorite is the Antiqua in the black and white floral pattern (black and white is so in now, by the way). To be twice as trendy, go for an espadrille that is also a ballet flat, such as the Pacific espadrille by Michael Kors. Jessica Simpson is also making an espadrille with a trendy twist: the outsole is patent leather. But to be honest, I prefer the canvas. Sometimes its better to stick with tradition. Seven centuries of shoe manufacturing don’t lie!

Besitos,

Graciela
