Diane von Furstenberg Samples Sale

Diane von Fursternberg is emphatically not a sample sale you can duck out to visit on your lunch hour

A word of warning: Diane Von Fursternberg is emphatically not a sample sale you can duck out to visit on your lunch hour. When we stopped by at 10:30 a.m., just an hour and a half after the sale opened, lines were already 45 minutes long and they looked to be even longer when we left. It’s cold out there, so we recommend bringing or making a line buddy who can hold your spot while you run across the street to Starbucks for a very necessary winter warmer. The line, of course, begs a question: is the sale worth the wait?

The short answer: not really. If you’re not too invested in the breadth of offerings, you’re better off waiting two months and hitting the Barney’s Warehouse Sale, which has a pretty equivalent wait time, but much, much lower prices. At these prices, you’re also better off taking your chances at Loehmann’s or Century 21 or waiting for a DVF sale on Gilt or Rue La La (bonus: no lines).

If, however, you want a huge selection, suck it up and wait in the line. The sale is crowded and chaotic and prices aren’t cheap, but the offerings are fantastic. A turquoise leather jacket ($250) is soft as butter and fits like a dream. Speaking of dreamy: a to-die-for kelly green leather cropped motorcycle jacket ($250) is occupying about 85% of our fantasy life at this moment. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the sale’s most baffling item: a giant turquoise leather tee shirt. Who is this for? It’s impossible to imagine any body type this might flatter. Fortunately, most other items look to be more becoming. Von Furstenberg’s signature wrap dress ($125) is available in a variety of prints: go for the flirty pink leopard. A nude and black pleated and tiered dress ($250) is part flapper, part 1960s, all sex bomb. Olive military-inspired shorts are adorable, but do you really want to pay $80 for polyester blend?

Bags are pricey for the size and generally underwhelming. The exception: a distressed almost Mylar-looking shoulder bag, available in both gold and silver. $275 is a lot for a smallish bag at a sample sale, but this is a great investment piece. -Leila Cohan-Miccio

I thought the wraps were $150 and the regular dresses were $125?
