Death Becomes Her

“This is life’s ultimate cruelty. It offers us a taste of youth and vitality, and then it makes us witness our own decay.”

For those of us looking to quell our fashion thirst without sucking the marrow from our Prada Vitello Diano’s, (um, ’twas a Christmas present, lay off!) look no further than the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Through February 21st, you can bear witness to the first-ever, or so they say, exhibition dedicated to gothic laden fashion trends. Gothic: Dark Glamour, set in an oh-so-Allen Poe haunted castle, labyrinth and apothecary, is much more than a satirical nod to fashionistas in mourning. It’s art.

Popularly associated with body piercings and black-clad teens raiding Hot Topic in the suburban malls of America, gothic trends represented here hail from detailed masterminds like John Galliano of Dior, Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui, Yoji Yamamoto and more. My favorite are the Japanese Elegant Gothic Lolita dresses, which in addition to creating a global subculture, partially inspired Anna Sui’s Spring 2009 collection (center black & white dress). The many gowns on display are in more ways than one to die for, and the red satin Manolos will leave you bleeding in love.
