Cynthia Rowley Sample Sale Review 1/27

Is there any phrase that’s been more misused in recent years than “sample sale”? Before Gilt or RueLaLa, a sample sale was just what it sounds like: a sale that sold pre-used samples. Now, Middle America’s need to follow in the footsteps of Carrie Bradshaw et. al. means every markdown is, incorrectly, called a sample sale. Fortunately, Cynthia Rowley is on it with an honest-to-god good old fashioned sample sale. For real.

Now, this being a sample sale, sizes are limited. You’ll do best if you have a skinny body and giant feet. For those who do, there are some great bargains. A pair of buttery-soft leather pants is $199 (from $400). A ladylike slate blue blouse epitomizes Rowley’s style as much as anything – not too shabby for a $89 garment.

As in the Portland of TV’s Portlandia, the dream of the 90s is alive at Cynthia Rowley. A pair of summery sling backs with floral ties is soooo Winona Ryder in Reality Bites and a shockingly good deal at $29. A floral babydoll, $89, is so perfect your friends will think you spent hours scouring vintage shops (or had the good sense to hang onto it since you bought it in 1994. Our vote for piece of the sale, though, goes to a printed navy kimono-style dress: sexy, yet sophisticated, and a worthy investment of $159.

Small goods have uniformly good prices: two-tone belts are a mere $9, preppy Moroccan striped necklaces are $40, and old-school Hollywood glamour sunglasses are $89. Looks like the sale isn’t just aping the style of the 90s – it’s got the prices, too.
