At the beginning of each New Year, we often find ourselves looking for a fresh start and a fresh new look to carry us through the coming year. Our posh pooches are no different and deserve a shiny new ’do to kick off 2009 with a bang! With that said, it’s always important to leave their beautiful coats in the care of a quality groomer with a sparkling resume!
The Pet Maven knows just how stressful going to the groomer can be for your four-legged friend, so they make it easy and bring the groomer to you! They offer several options depending on what your dog needs, and most packages include a pet massage (talk about luxury!) www.thepetmaven.com
Located on the Upper East Side since 1959, Canine Styles is a well-established grooming shop. They have a team of talented and experienced groomers that are very well known around the neighborhood for their technical abilities. After having my Sheltie, Dalton, groomed there for the first time this past summer, I can see why they have such a wonderful reputation! You would think with such great care, there would be a big price tag, but they are very reasonably priced! www.caninestyles.com
If your looking for a more hands-on option, take your pooch to the Dog Wash in Greenwich Village, where you can wash your doggie yourself. For just $19.00, the Dog Wash supplies you with everything needed to get your dog into Tip Top Shape including: a private bath bay booth, an apron, endless amounts of warm water, shampoo, brushes and towels galore! (Insider Tip: Last wash starts at 6:15pm, so plan accordingly!) www.dogwashnyc.com
Leave your pooch’s bad hair days in 2008!

This past weekend I found myself wandering around the East Village where I stumbled upon an adorable store front with an assortment of ultra chic doggie essentials. Wagwear, which opened in 2006 has been in the pet supplies business for over 10 years. After entering the store I quickly found myself wanting just about everything I saw. They have goodies ranging from ceramic dog bowls to an organic Cotton Surfer Hoody. (made of light-weight 100% hemp terry) If you can’t make it down to the store, they have an easy to maneuver website where you can place an order (www.wagwear.com).
My personal favorite would be their Braided Fisherman collar & leash set, perfect for the upcoming nautical trends that are showing for the Spring Summer 2009 seasons. Retailing for just $22.00 for the collar and $34.00 for the set, these pieces are essential to any fashion forward canine wardrobe!
If you’ve got a patriotic pooch on your hands, the Merino Wool Flag Sweater is the perfect addition to your dog’s wardrobe for the presidential inauguration at the end of the month. Hand knit from the finest Italian wool, your pup will stay toasty and warm as he shows how proud he is to be an all American dog!
Wagwear’s flagship store is located at:
48 East 11th Street
New York, NY 10003

We’ve all had that moment, (some of us more than others) where you think “I just have to have that adorable droopy eyed puppy in the window.” From that point on you eat, drink and sleep puppy, putting him on the very top of your holiday wishlist. When Christmas morning came, you opened a beautifully wrapped box with a giant red velvet bow to find that very puppy you’ve wanted. After the luster of the cute puppy wears off, you might find yourself thinking..now what?
The most important thing you can do for your fuzzy pup is enroll them in one of the cities finest dog training programs. Teaching them all the obedience basics early like sit, stay and leave it are essential to molding your crazy little canine into a first rate city dog. (Might save a few pairs of your prized Louboutin’s from being chewed as well!)
Wag The Dog in Brooklyn believes that dog training should be affordable, offering Puppy Kindergarten, a 6 week/6 sessions group class for $200 a dog. Group sessions are essential for socializing your little pooch early. However, if making the trip to Brooklyn isn’t an option, they are more than happy to travel to your home for a private in home lesson.

Biscuits and Bath also offers a 6 class program for $350 with locations all over Manhattan. They are highly skilled in teaching your puppy all the control commands in a positive environment that will have your pup growing into a wonderful, well mannered dog!
