As the last signs of snow melt away and we finally (Hopefully, fingers crossed!) say farewell to the bitter cold winter, pooch parks and city sidewalks will soon be flooded with the thousands of NYC pooches who are in need of some of that wonderful crisp spring air.  Since it has been what seems like an extremely long winter, I thought you might be a little rusty on the important dog laws of this city and could use a quick refresher course that will keep your pooch safe and your wallet full!

One of the most prevalent and most enforced is the  Dog Leash Law which states: If you are walking a dog in a public and / or open area next to a public area it is necessary to have your dog on a leash and that leash can be no more than six feet.  This law is important for the safety of fido, as you never know what can spook them with all the hustle and bustle of this city.

The Dog Waste Law comes with a stiff fine, but is incredibly easy to avoid….just pick up the poop!  (see, isn’t that simple?) Infact, Trixie + Peanut sell Oxo-biodegradable “scoopies,” which retail for $6.00 for a pack of 24,  are perfect for picking up the poop and saving the environment!

For additional NYC dog laws check out Downtown Pet’s website, which has a complete list.

For those of you who have been sitting on the edge of your seats for what seems like an eternity, waiting for the big decision by the Obama’s of Portuguese Water Dog or the always popular Labradoodle.  Well my fellow dog lovers, you can finally sit back and relax as the Obama’s have announced they are set to welcome a rescued Portuguese Water Dog into their royal first family in mid April!

The perfect addition for the Obama family, Portuguese Water Dogs are well known throughout the dog world as one of the best hypoallergenic canines in addition to being a happy go lucky family dog!  A breed known for being a hard worker, this dog still knows how to let loose and run wild.

I am now officially looking forward to the next big piece that will be solved in this presidential pooch puzzle…the always important name selection.  Personally I think they are going to choose something fun and of course all American.  I would expect once that four legged friend enters the White House, we will be flooded with wonderful snapshots throughout the newspapers, televisions and internet of Sasha and Malia racing through the beautiful green lawn, with their furry best friend in tow!

As a fellow New York pet owner, I know just how incredibly important it is to keep your four legged friends calendar of events up to date and full. Whether your pooch is a shop-a-holic, or loves socializing with fellow canine’s, there is plenty of things to keep them happy. With that said, you might be scratching your head with new ideas that will keep their tails wagging!  Have no fear, below are some great options that cover all corners of this concrete island we live on.

Meetup.com is a wonderful social network that hosts groups for basically any breed in existence.   Or if you’re looking to mix it up a bit, you can join one of the “active dog” or “small dog” groups which is all encompassing to any dog.  Throughout the month they meet at parks all over the city, often in one of the great off leash parks, so your dog can get some great exercise with their new best friends. It is free to join most groups, you just have to contact the administrator and ask to join!

Looking to sniff out the dog world’s trendiest stores, bakeries and parks? Snifnycdogs.com has this incredibly detailed map of Manhattan, as well as the other boroughs that pin points all the top dog stores, bakeries, veterinarians and more.  This site also lists several of the Meetup group calendar dates, so you can be sure that you will not miss the next social event of the season!

My fellow dog lovers, we have come to that time of year in New York City (and the entire dog world for that matter) where thousands of primped and polished pooches from 170 breeds and varieties strut their stuff around the show ring in hopes of becoming the Westminster Kennel Club’s top dog.  The super bowl of the dog world, Westminster takes place on February 9th and 10th at our very own Madison Square Garden.

Are you a bit of novice when it comes to all the different dog breeds or are you looking to get a new dog to add to your family but can’t decide? If so we suggest you definitely tune in!  Often the announcers will discuss the common traits and personalities you can expect from each breed.

If you’re in a panic wondering just how in the world you can score a ticket to this prestigious event, look no further.  Ticketmaster is selling tickets for $40.00 per day, or if you’re a serious viewer you can purchase a two-day ticket for $75.00.  If you can’t take off from work or you’d rather watch from home with your little champion, CNBC and USA network will both be broadcasting live Monday from 8-9PM and Tuesday 8-11PM. www.ticketmaster.com

For more information on what you can expect to see at the show check out The Westminster Kennel Club website: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/
