Cafe Con Leche: A little taste of Cuba on the Upper West Side

7 September 2007

Last night I dined alfresco with a good friend at Cafe Con Leche, a Cuban cafe on Amersterdam Avenue between 80th and 81st. We enjoyed cocktails served in hollowed out pineapples (and drew stares when we’d finished our drinks and began gnawing on the embty “glasses”). She had chicken in mango sauce for a mere $11.95, and I had shrimp in garlic sauce for $10.95. She had a starter of tostones (fried plantains for those of you who aren’t in the know) for $2.50 and I had a bowl of delicious sancocho for $3.50. All in all we came out pretty well. We would have saved money if we had forgone the pineapple cocktails ($8.95 each), but you only live once, right? She got a charming picture of me drinking out of the pineapple–all you can see is my hands and lower lip. Cafe Con Leche is definetly a great place to chill out, have good food, a drink, and not spend too much.
