Burberry, Fendi, Prada, & more Sample Sale Review - 9/27

We spent a while wracking our brains for the best adjective to describe the sample sale currently happening at 16 W. 56th Street, but no matter how much we brainstormed, “weird” was the only word that came to mind. First things first: despite advertising “Burberry, Fendi, Prada, & More“, we only spotted the “and more” when we stopped by on Tuesday morning. To be sure, there are some very good brands here (Missoni and Cavalli, to name a few), but those looking for the Big Three will be disappointed.

Second, we have never in our lives received more suffocating service. While attentiveness is a virtue, the salesperson never left our side, despite our efforts to give every possible “not interested” signal within the realm of politeness. She was constantly holding up items and asking if we’d like to try them on, deterred neither by a curt “no, thanks” or a pointed “I’m just going to keep looking on my own, thanks.” We actually had to ask her to leave the communal dressing room and, even then, she kept popping with more unsolicited recommendations. It was very strange and more than a little off-putting.

Nonetheless, if you can get past the false advertising and obsequiousness, there are some decent deals to be found. We swooned for a Class by Cavalli coral cashmere tunic, flattering and pillow-soft, if still a little steep at $380. A snuggly cashmere long Tricot sweater was better-priced at $190, but knit in a manner reminiscent of nothing so much as The Cosby Show. You’re better off with dressier clothes, like a subtle gold Valentino Red pencil skirt, a steal at just $180 from an original price of $690. (Original prices are only sometimes marked, just one more weird thing about this sale). The sale’s best bet, however, might be a classic v-neck Missoni dress. Sure, $395 (from $985) isn’t cheap, but when you think what Missoni for Target is going for on Ebay, it seems almost reasonable.
