Bitta Design Group Sample Sale
, New York, NY
I left the office yesterday to go to the Bitta Design Group Sample Sale. By the time I arrived at the Peninsula Hotel, my hair and feet were soaked wet and not even the Saks Christmas decoration could brighten my gloomy mood. The Peninsula Hotel lobby was filled with the soft sounds of jazz music, careless-yet-well-dressed tourists, and the joyous sounds coming from the hotel’s restaurant. I sighed and said: this is better be good. When I got on the third floor the first thing I noticed was the refreshment table, which to me was a sign that this sale would not tempt me to open my wallet. (FYI: if they offer food, it’s because they want to soften you up for their sales pitch.) There were only a couple of people in the room, and most of them seemed pretty chummy with the salespeople. I was asked if that was my first one and I had to admit it was, though it might be my last, in spite of the fact that I told them I would be back. I looked around and I couldn’t figure out what was discounted, or how much. Few items had a price on the tag, and it was not clear what they retailed for and how much they were now. (Note to sample sale proprietors: I need to know the original price of an item before I buy it at an event like that–how do I know it’s a bargain if I don’t know how much it’s marked down?) The pieces varied between what looked like semi-precious jewelry to very expensive pieces that I would not take out on the street unless the price included a body guard. I noticed a necklace with clovers that I liked and when I reached home I Googled variations on “clover necklace” until I discovered that that style is “The Alhambra inspired clover necklace by Van Clef and Arpel. You can see Mariah featuring it in this picture. They have it in mother of pearl and turquoise and they also have the earrings. I wish I asked the price to see if it was at least in my budget. What am I saying? I don’t have a budget; I’ve got my Christmas gift. Oh well. It was a nice thought.
Location 700 5th Avenue (The Peninsula Hotel)
3rd Floor-Chelsea
12/19/2007-12/21/2007 9AM-6PM
Note: Mariah is most likely wearing the Arpel jewelry, the picture has the sole purpose to give you an idea. If that’s the style you are looking for it’s worth going to the sale.
