Season 2 of Ugly Betty premieres this week, and in light of America Ferrera’s recent Emmy win, I thought it might be nice to give her some props…and discuss the red carpet ensembles we’ve seen her in over the last year.
By now, everyone in America (unless they live under rocks) knows who America Ferrera is: she’s the lovable latina who plays the dowdy-yet-sharp-witted Betty Suarez on ABC’s megahit, Ugly Betty. Ugly Betty is an English Language revisioning of Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, a Colombian telenovela. I grew up watching Betty La Fea (I also watched the Mexican version, La Fea Mas Bella), and I can tell you that, although most people I know think that Ugly Betty is nowhere near as good as the original, I think Ugly Betty is simply fantastic. Why? Well, mostly because of America Ferrera. I LOVE her, and the way she represents mi gente. (She’s Honduran, in case you didn’t know.)
On screen, Ferrera wears lots of polka dots and frumpy skirts as well as braces and thick glasses. Off screen, Ferrera is a straight up hottie, a grade-A mamacita. This past week she stunned Emmy watchers in a bright blue, curve hugging dress that was made for her by Monique Lhuillier (pronounced: humina humina humina…). At the golden globes, she wore another fab number (also curve hugging) by Brian Reyes. Ferrera knows how to wear bold colors , and resists wearing the “in” color just because its trendy. When all of the other carpet strutters were wearing white, America was wearing purple. At the Imagen awards she wore a floor length creamy gown with a fitted bodice, and a the premiere of The Tudors she wore a sexy LBD. America has yet to end up on a “worst dressed” list, and probably won’t, as long as she remains true to herself, something both Betty and America fully embrace.
Te amo, mi hermanita bella!
