10 Fashion Dos and Don'ts for Fall 2013
, New York, NY
Fear not, for the thick and muggy air of late summer is now moving south. As we usher in fall’s cool breezes and all the wonderful things autumn entails — including bonfires, mulled wine and cable knit sweaters — it’s time to think about fall fashion. Check out this list of fall 2013 fashion dos and don’ts and abide by them to the best of your ability.
DO: Get Graphic
Channel the babes of 1960s mod when putting together outfits this fall. Think black and white graphic patterns, houndstooth, loudly colored frocks, Twiggy inspired dresses and lots of capes. You’d do alright to gain your inspiration from 50-year-old fashion glossies.
DON’T: Kill Your Feet With Painful Shoes
They say pain is beauty, but that’s not always true. Invest in comfortable kicks for fall and leave the stilettos for special occasions. For fall 2013, it’s all about quirky sneakers, chunky boots, comfy flats and sweet booties.
DO: Wear Dark, Skinny Jeans
A classic skinny jean that flatters your figure is as versatile as garments come. Skip anything that’s too embellished or flashy and instead opt for something basic. A dark skinny jean looks perfect when layered with tanks, blazers, cardigans, scarves and even skirts or dresses.
DON’T: Be Afraid of White
White after Labor Day is supposedly a grave fashion faux pas, but designers and stylists alike are bucking that maxim for fall 2013. In fact, a little white dress is a must. Pair it with silver accessories and you’re good to go.
DO: Sport Cute Hats
Whether you prefer a beanie, cozy knitwear, newsboys or fedoras, definitely accessorize with hats this fall. You won’t have a hard time finding hats this season, either. All the big designers have theirs out on display, including Tracy Reese, BCBG Max Azria and Kate Spade.
DON’T: Neglect Your Spring and Summer Frocks
Save money and get creative by transitioning your spring and summer duds into autumn. For example, a flowery frock pairs nicely with dark, thick tights and a boyfriend cardigan.
DO: Wear Metallics and Mauves On Your Nails
If you’re in the market for a few new nail polishes, make sure you load up on an earthy mauve and lots of dark metallics. Mauve is a huge trend for fall 2013, as are steampunk inspired colors. For a cohesive look, match your nail color to a piece of jewelry, accessory or even your eye makeup.
DON’T: Wear Super Tight Clothing
Ladies around the world: rejoice. There’s a time and place for bodycon dresses and clingy garments, but for the most, fall 2013 is all about comfortable, loungey apparel. Think Portland ’90s grunge meets haute couture.
DO: Wear Lots of Leather
You don’t have to be a biker babe to rock a mean piece of leather; this durable and edgy fabric can look good on any fashionista. Tone down the gruff factor by pairing your leather with softer details (such as lace or pastels) or by sticking to tiny leather embellishments, such as t-shirts with leather details, leather gloves or leather shoes.
DON’T: Forget to Play With Prints
Throw caution to the wind and mix flashy prints this season. The more unlikely the match, the better. For example, a lime green and orange floral print blouse paired with vertical black and white stripes will get you noticed in a good way. Also experiment with matching out-there prints as separates.
