Buns & Chignons
For your packed spring social schedule, an array of updos to suit every look.
, New York, NY
Copying Spring 2010 runway hairstyles from Alexander Wang and Miu Miu, celebrities have sporting sexy up-dos everywhere from the red carpet to Sunday brunch. Smooth chignons, textured chignons, pumped with volume chignons and braids, braids, braids are blossoming all around this spring.
For a sophisticated but effortless look, take Hillary Duff’s textured and voluminous chignon. A classic chignon, from the French word “chignon du cou,” which means nape of neck, is achieved by pinning plaits in a knot or bun at the nape of the neck. Making the top of the hair loose, as opposed to pulling it back tightly, then spraying and pinning the excess into a casual coif makes a chignon updated and fresh.
For windy days, high and tight and sleek buns are back. A nod to your inner ballerina, these knots are an easy at-home option for the stylistically challenged requiring little talent and a lot of hairspray. If you have nice ears and long hair, considering pulling it all up. The braver you feel – or more hair you have – the higher you can pile. And don’t be shy about sporting it to Sunday brunch. Buns are beautiful ways to camouflage locks in need of blowouts.
And braids. Pay homage to Alexander McQueen’s 2010 Spring runway with long, messy side braids. Another way to deal with hair that needs a fix-me-up, side braids are sexy and effortless but only if you have the lock length to pull them off. Hair too short? They sell braided extensions at a mall kiosk near you.
