APP-TITUDE TEST
, New York, NY
Having just discovered the iPhone and gained a subsequent addiction to the App Store, I recently came to realize that aside from having handy dandy tip calculators and morphing into a flashlight… it has some nifty and little known home design tools that make for good fun. Case in point, paint company Benjamin Moore is launching its new paint matching application this June that’s a free download away.
Literally all you need is to snap a photo and let technology do the rest as the program matches the picture to a particular hue in its library of 3,300 shades. It also pops up some complimentary shades and of course for a little self promotion, the directions to your nearest Benjamin Moore store using a GPS system.
Or if home décor has you crunching numbers more than playing around with color palettes, consider the 5-in-1 iHandy Carpenter application ($1.99), which turns your iPhone into a steel protractor, unending ruler, two different types of leveling bars, and a plumb bob which looks like a weight hung on string but really works to test out how vertical your wall runs. This gives you the chance to do some carpentering without getting your hands dirty.
And for the truly unusual DIY tool, try the Hole Spacer ($0.99) application which literally evenly spaces out your holes. So if you’re ever in need of drilling some shelf brackets up, the app allows you to state how long the area is before the phone divides up the length into equal spaces down to the hundredth of an inch and tells you where to make those drill holes. I know, I know… utterly useless but you have to admit it’s definitely fun exploring all the crazy home gadgets that get created everyday.
