I‘ve lived in New York for almost 18 years now, and have certainly learned to separate fact from fiction when it comes to finding a good meal. While I do go to fancy restaurants for special occasions, I’ve eaten enough bad meals in the Big Apple to know that choosing a restaurant based on its stellar reviews does not ensure a good meal. So I’ve become a self proclaimed expert in discovering the 30-seat-restaurant-with-the-owner-in-the-kitchen-or-close-to-it that serves excellent quality meals. One of these places is Petite Crevette. I read a review a month ago that got my attention, and I decided to take my husband to this new Brooklyn restaurant. Since finding new and affordable restaurants earns me a lot of credit with my husband, I am constantly reading reviews and talking with people, seeking THE place to eat. The review listed the restaurant as 144 Hicks Street and the GPS left us in front of a bakery. We walked in the bakery, confused, but confident that somehow the bakery doubles as a fish restaurant…??? It appeared that we were not the only ones who made this mistake. The restaurant, however, is around the corner, also 144 Hicks Street. The restaurant has a thrift shop decor and is NOT Le Cirque. I’ve been back since that first time, and still wonder about the pheasant feathers hanging on the walls. Don’t take your future in laws there expecting to impress them, but do take them after you marry their daughter and they can appreciate an excellent meal and your money budgeting skills. The food is as fresh as can be, and is cooked to perfection. The name might make you think it’s French but I didn’t find anything typically French on the menu. Try the tuna Carpaccio or the salmon Carpaccio for appetizers, and the grilled Branzino for the main course.- I know you’ll thank me! The prices are great, but don’t forget to bring cash with you. Another plus: it is BYOB, although they do charge a cork fee. (If you don’t have a bottle at home, no worries, there is a liquor store around the corner.) I’ve read mixed reviews about the service, but our experience has been very good. Right now, this place is my favorite seafood restaurant in Brooklyn. Bon Appetite! Mirela
