10 Reasons to Celebrate Santa Lucia

[simage=12,512,y]Ever since we were little, each Christmas Eve we would stay up ALL night, spying from our windows to get a glimpse of Santa and his reindeer, eager to find out what presents he got us. Well, since there are 15 more days we have to wait to see if we were naughty or nice we decided to embrace the European celebration of Santa Lucia on December 13. Born in 284 AD in Sicily, Santa Lucia lived in a time where Christianity was forbidden and because she refused to marry and gave her dowry away she was accused of being a Christian. To celebrate her in Italy children prepare a bite to eat for Santa Lucia when she arrives on her donkey to bring presents. The children must not see her, unless they want ashes in their eyes (at least with Santa, if you see him he bribes you with more presents).  In Sweden, each town chooses a girl to represent Santa Lucia, dressed in all white and adorned with a candle-lit crown who will parade around town giving food and gifts to everyone. If you want to celebrate Santa Lucia in New York this year, dress all in white on December 13th and give a gift to someone in need.
